"Rock Profile" is Lame :(
Thursday late night shopping, went to JB Hifi with David and Karl and was browsing the DVD isle. Scanning the rows as one does I notice out of my eyesockets "Matt Lucas & David Walliams" Hmmmmmm Bells ring. 2 seconds of processing time and my brain meat catches on.. ohh yeahhh .. Matt Lucas & David Walliams of "Little Brittain" holy shit what is this all about?.. hmm "Rock Profile" pick it up, the font is appealing.. read the caption,
"The show which first introduced us to the unique comedy brilliance of Matt Lucas and David Walliams" - Heat.
OMFG I think to myself. I neeeed this, man this is gonna be great.. get to see more brilliant smart humour from my comedy hero's of present tense. So yep I purchase it. Tonight i pop it in the DVD tray, watch it.. its total crap! If you like Little Brittain and you see this in a store and wonder if you should get it.. DON'T. The premise for each episode is Matt and David impersonate famous musical celebrities such as Michael Jackson, Oasis, Elton John, Blur and lots of past day UK pop bands such as steps etc. So its them being interviewed by this guy, I don't know who he is but I gather he is a UK Tv show host. He asks them questions and they proceed to answer them "in character". Now you would think this would be entertaining but no it is not. Their gags are predictable and lack the depth of character portrayed in Little Brittain. The whole thing comes off as really cheap looking too. :( And the interviewer dude gets annoying as he answers "Riiiight" in response to the silly eccentricities being displayed.
I made myself watch every episode on Disc 1 saying to myself no no keep watching, its Matt Lucas & David Walliams they are brilliant, it will get better, but no it did not. Was really dissapointed. The only redeeming quality of this 2 disc dvd for me was a half hour interview with Matt and David on disc 2. The interview was pretty good, Matt and David seem pretty smart and funny, they did some characters and showed a clip from the "at the time" upcoming Little Brittain series which featured the character "Vikki Pollard" being questioned in a courtroom - funny. Something which stood out to me was that they both said they were shy people and that they felt more comfortable when in character. Alot of self confessed shy people even people who dont appear shy but see themselves this way seem to be really talented comedians/actors.. people like Tom Green and Ali G (Sacha Baron Cohen) come to mind. They get a lot of feeling from the world around them and seem to have a deeper understanding of what is funny and why etc. That's kinda a bad description but I dunno this quality of feeling, anxious mind whatever you want to label it provides great natural talents and strengths in these areas it seems. Anyway so I was dissapointed with "Rock Profile" but still regard "Little Brittain" as one of the funniest and smartest sketch shows out at the moment.
